Barbastelle bats breeding in Norfolk. 21/7/98

A discovery of Barbastelle Bats breeding in North Norfolk in the summer of 1996 was splendid news. This discovery was made during a routine inspection for the presence of bats in old farm buildings. The location of this roost must remain anonymous for obvious reasons but its discovery is a very important one, as it seems to be the only known breeding colony in Britain.

Norfolk Bat Group members have installed a covert Infra Red security camera and recorder near the location, so that the bats' daily activities can be monitored. This has only been possible with the aid of a large grant from an (as yet) unnamed body. More publicity on this matter will follow shortly.

Unfortunately some of the renovation work and unauthorised entry over the past three years has disturbed the colony and caused them to leave more than once. By July 7th this year they had finally returned to their normal location within the building and hopes are high that the 30 strong maternity group will suffer no further disturbance, and settle to raise their young successfully.

We hope to put up some pictures of the colony when available and keep everyone posted with the story this year as it unfolds.
