Earthwatch Lecture: Animals & their Ecosystems

Two talks on the complicated business of reconciling the needs of species with the delicate balance of their habitats, from zebras, giraffes and rhinos in South Africa to the lesser-known bats of Malaysia’s rainforests.

The talk on Malaysian conservation by Dr. Tigga Kingston (Boston University) centres on her work in the Krau Wildlife Reserve in central Malaysia, whose 30-million-year-old rainforest is home to the greatest diversity of insect-eating bats in the world, about 70 species in all. Her teams have been catching, banding and radio-tracking bats, mapping key habitat features, and preparing for a public open day to introduce local people to the wonders around them.
