Nathusius's Pipistrelle - 21/7/98
Whilst surveying with a "time expansion" type bat detector after dark near
Filby Broad at the end of July, staff of the Broads Authority along with Bat
Conservation Trust staff, recorded some flying bats with a peak energy of 39
khz. These appear to be Nathusius's Pipistrelle and a new species for the
county. This species is different not only in its call but also in that it
has a longer 4th finger and the tail membrane is well haired on the basal
half and beside the tibia.
Although this bat has been sighted in adjacent counties and we are pleased
to have our first evidence of this unusual bat - thanks to Cath Wilson and
Colin Cato.
The calls have been fed through a computer which seems to confirm their
identity on a sonargram, but further evidence - hopefully in the shape of
the dicovery of the whole colony will be found during the rest of this summer.
